Further strike action may be taken by second level teachers around the country if the latest proposals from the Department of Education and Skills are rejected. The Central Executive Committee of the Association of Secondary Teachers Ireland (ASTI) is recommending that its members reject proposals which were drawn up and presented during talks before Christmas by Anna Perry, Chair of the Teachers’ Conciliation Council.
The ASTI is currently conducting a ballot of its 18,000 members, the results of which will be known next month. ASTI President Ed Byrne said he could not rule out further school closures if the new proposals were rejected in the ballot. Mr Byrne said that teachers were very cognizant of the needs of their students and would take all the issues into account when deciding on future action.
